"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made in perfect love." 1 John 4:18
There is No Fear in Love
Fear has to do With Punishment
Other translations like the NASB and CSB say fear involves punishment but what's interesting is the New Living Translation that says "for fear of punishment". Fear in this sense is directly associated with punishment. Us as believers have been completely forgiven of all our sins and we know our destiny so we live for Christ and have no need to fear future punishment. In harsh terms, fearing is showing God that you're not ready for what he has for you in the future. Trust me, I know that that can lead to consequences. So do NOT fear because we've been forgiven and are loved!
The One Who Fears is Not Made in Perfect Love
Going off of what was said in the last paragraph, "showing God that you're not ready for what He has for you", it also shows that those who fear punishment don't necessarily have a complete or mature relationship with God. So, that's a good reminder to continue building your relationship with Christ so you can live fearlessly and fully for God!
It's normal to question what happens after death, but when you know God's love for you and you can live it out, there's no reason to fear because you know what lies ahead. You know that you're going to spend the rest of eternity with Jesus so go and live with joy instead of fear!
